Sopchoppy River is a great little dark water stream with high banks and a few good sandbars to have lunch on during the trip. The high banks and trees keep the trip relatively cook in the Summer.

My Report:

Sopchoppy River 2017-08-20

Don instigated a trip on the Sopchoppy for Lynn, Liz, Butch, Bob, Ron and John. It was a warm day with few clouds in the sky until we were almost off the river. The river had a lot more S-curves than I remembered and this made it a little more challenging. There was one swim which was caused by a cypress knee jumping out in front of an unsuspecting paddler. It was a teaching moment for empting water from an overturned kayak.

I saw one squirrel and hear a few birds. There were some yellow flowers blooming along the forest roads, but given the rutted condition and speed we were traveling I could not tell what they were.

Getting out of the water at Oak Park is always a challenge with it's very high steep banks. Liz had put a rope along the path for an earlier paddle and it was a great help to pull yourself up the bank.

The water level was around 10.55 feet for most of the paddle and the cfs was 110. The one pullover could have been avoided if there had been about 6 more inches of water. The water level is dropping quickly, so unless it rains it will be rough to paddle the section from Martian Bridge (FR-329).
