We put in at Highway 12. The gauge read 13 feet, but I think it was a little off. Started at 9:00am and ended at 5pm. There were 8 major trees across the river making a challenging run. The water was very clear and there were not many gators.

My Report:

This part of the river can be deceiving. At highwater the trip can be as short as 4 and half hours. If recent high waters have receded, there are probably a good many downed trees across the river. There is no way to know if any good samaritan has cleared the downed trees. In the worst case it could take 8 hours to make it to Old Bainbridge Road. So it is best to bring extra water and sufficient food for two meal stops. About 20 minutes into our trip we were approached by a couple in a john boat with a chainsaw. They had completed the removal of all the smaller trees and told us just how many pull-overs there were - eight. Despite half the group being novice paddlers we decided to accept the adventure. In 15 minutes we reached the first set of trees. Two together, making it the most challenging crossover - or so we thought. The water was really clear and we went almost another hour before reaching the next tree. We didn't see another boater or paddler on the river for about three hours after that.

Along this stretch of the river there are only two landowners on the east side of the river. Neither appreciate trespassers, but are open to you landing and lunching on the shores of the river. The trip was a real challenge, but no-one got hurt and all had a good time.
