Aucilla River Trip 07-14-2012
Art Cooper , Tom and Carol Butler, Carol Trescott, John Lorenz and Charlotte Hand were lead by Dan Dobbins on a great trip. The water was at a little over 48 feet and the cfs was 231 (on 13th gauge, not reporting on 14th) at the Lamont gauge. This is down from the previous week of over 400 cfs. The mosquitoes were out in force, but not as bad as the week before. We put in at Rocky Ford (Rheems Landing). This adds another two miles to the trip and is a boat landing, so much easier that trying to put in at the 257 bridge, which is very rocky and overgrown with weeds. In this upper section of the river, there is one small section of fast water, then an oak tree further down that has a small bit of fast water around it. After the 257 bridge there were two small areas of fast water before the S-curve, which is about 100 yards of fast moving water. There were a couple of small areas of fast water before we got to the take out at Lost Dog Rapid. Dan, Tom, Carol B and Carol T shot the rapid and made it successfully. We were off the water and on the road when a slight rain can up. Along the road from the rapid the marshmallows, white morning glory, coreopsis, Maypops (passifloria incarnate linnaeus), helianthus (sunflower family), St. John Wort (hypericum) and penstemons were in bloom. We saw two deer leaving the rapid and I was told there was a fox and four deer sighted when the turn around was being done. Add to that one turkey spotted on US 27 on the way to the put-in.
Besides the mosquitoes, the biggest problem with the trip is getting to and from the take out. A lot of the roads are blocked off and who ever is leading the trip has to really know the way in and out.
