This is a 5 mile paddle from FR 329 bridge to the FR 343 (oak Park bridge). One of the best little streams to go on to keep up your technical skills.

My Report:

Don, Dan, Lynn and John had a good time on the Sopchoppy. The sky was overcast when we got on the water and we had three little rain showers during the trip, but they actually felt good. Since the river had been up recently there were some new trees down, but only one is a real problem. The tree fell diagonally across the river leaving only a very shallow area on the left that people could slide over once Don cut a large part of a ti-ti tree out of the way. I checked out the upper right part of the tree and there is a small passage there, but it will require removal of some small logs so that a kayak might be able to make it through at lower water levels. This is a very large tree and it does not look like it will be going anywhere soon. This new tree is located not too far past (about mile) the old limbo log that is still there, but can be ducked under at the almost 14 ft. level. The river went from 13.86 ft. to 13.75 while we were on the river and the cfs went from 400 to 380, according to the Oak Park gauge at the end of the trip. What this means, at lower water levels, is that the passage to the left of the ti-ti tree will become a pullover.

Mosquitoes were present at both the put-in and takeout, but were no where as bad in the morning as they were on our scouting trips after 6 PM in the evening, earlier in the week, when we cleared a path through the weeds to the put-in and take-out. We did see a fawn and doe on the way to a great meal at a restaurant just past the gas station on the left headed south from Sopchoppy. I think the name is Coastal Family Seafood and is owned by the people who own a restaurant with the same name (and good food) in Sumatra. We have good food at reasonable prices and a lot of it!

The Sopchoppy at this time of the year does not have much in the way of blooming plants. I did sample some tupelo fruit and it has a citrus taste- sort of like a lime. On the way to the put in we did see a large number of Easter Lilies on FR 365, there were white penstemon(Penstemon canescens), some white azaleas, lanceleaf tickseed(Coreopsis lanceolata) yellow, hatpin(Eriocaulon decangulare) white,Rhexia (going too fast to tell what type) pink, marsh mallow-off white with purple(Hibiscus moscheutos) just past the put-in. Note: Driving a car at 45 mph on dirt roads does not lend itself to good plant identification.

From South Tallahassee head south on US 319 (Crawfordville Rd) for 15 miles, turn right on Arran Rd (CR 368) downtown Crawfordville. Go 3.5 miles then take a slight left onto Forest Rd 365 and go for 2.5 miles and turn right onto Forest Rd 348 for 2.6 miles. Then turn Left onto Forest Rd 329 go for 0.3 miles and cross the bridge. The put in is on the right or northwest side of the river. 30.061889,-84.491773.

For the turnaround go back to Forest Rd 348 (0.3 miles) turn right and go for 0.6 miles turn right Forest Rd 349 for 1.8 miles. Turn right on Oak Park Rd and go for 0.9 miles, then right on Forest Rd 343 for 0.4 miles. The take out is on the left across the bridge (southwest side). 30.12978,-84.49394 The parking lot is past the bridge on the right.

The river gage is on the take out bridge FR 343 see web site .
