Fellow FSKA Members,
As some of you are aware I was elected to be President of the FSKA a few weeks ago. I wanted to take the time to introduce myself and tell you about some of the changes I would like to make. So to introduce myself, I have been kayaking for almost 2 years now. At my real job Iím a Firefighter/EMT with St. Johns County Fire Rescue, and for my play job, I work at First Coast Outfitters part time. I started with a recreational kayak that my friend gave me and I paddled it mostly in the St. Johnís River (Mill Cove). After a few months of that I wanted to step up my skills and get a new kayak so I purchased a plastic sea kayak off of craigslist. From there I was hooked! The boat I paddle now is a composite Nigel Dennis Kayak, Romany LV. As far as my skills go, Iím an ACA certified Level 2 Coastal Kayaking Instructor. Iím also going for my BCU 3* Assessment in a few weeks to round out my skills. I enjoy all types of paddling, but mostly in the ocean.
Some of my goals as President of the FSKA are to build this into an even bigger statewide association. I know in the past we have been a large group of paddlers from all over the state and I want to bring this back! I want paddling groups from all over the state to be a part of us and submit their paddles to our calendar and participate in our events. I also want our level of training to expand, both on the water and off. There are a number of people who are certified to teach classes in our organization, including me, and I want them to help out with this. If you are one of those people, please contact me!
This brings me to another thing. Per our bylaws I am required to fill certain positions within the FSKA. Here is a list of them:
Promotion and Membership- responsible for the promotion of FSKA through the media, advertising material and other means; the recruitment of new members; and all aspects of annual membership renewal process.
Skills Development- responsible for kayak skills development programs; and certifying members have demonstrated their assisted rescue abilities on an annual basis
Trip Standards and Scheduling Ė responsible for overseeing the promotion, scheduling and classification of paddling trips; encouraging the submission of trip reports and photographs for inclusion of FSKAís website
Special Activities- responsible for coordinating social activities including the annual fall business meeting; scheduling monthly meeting resource guests; and coordination interaction with other paddling organizations.
Rules and Finance- responsible for drafting amendments to the Articles of Incorporation and By-laws; formulating FSKA policies as the need arises; supervising elections; keeping a record of meeting proceedings and insuring minutes are transported to meetings; assisting the Treasurer; developing budgets; and conducting audits.
As you can see there are a lot of shoes to fill. I would like to see some people step up and help out. While all of these positions are the responsibility of the elected officers, we canít do everything! We need some member to lead the group and at least two more people in each group for this to work well. If we fill these up there is no doubt in my mind we will grow as an organization. If you are interested please contact me.
In closing, I would like to say thank you for electing me President. I am hoping to grow this association through the next year. I have a open door policy so please feel free to contact me with any concerns, questions, or problem (even if they are with me!).

Happy Paddling!
Chris Naff
FSKA President
