The Florida Paddlers' Rendezvous was held October 26-28 at Adventures Unlimited sponsored by the West Florida Canoe and Kayak Club out of Pensacola.  140 paddlers registered on site for the Rendezvous and camped, stayed in cabins, a bunkhouse, recreation vehicles, trailers, and The Old School House. There were 21 clubs represented with the majority of people from Florida, but also people from Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, and Indiana.

There was a pre-event paddle on Thursday, Oct. 25 on the Chipola River in Marianna with 23 paddlers. Then everyone loaded up their craft at Magnolia Landing and headed on over to Milton.  Each day participants had a choice of streams to paddle, with a total of 14 paddling trips to select from, as well as two hikes, and a bicycle ride.  There were group meetings in the barn, video presentations, bonfires nightly, a potluck meal and an awards ceremony on Saturday night, and a "Whopper" tale-telling contest.

After a summer of severe drought, and low water levels on all the streams in the panhandle, there was 20 inches of rain over a two-day period 4 days prior to the Rendezvous.  This presented paddlers with some creeks that were really "cooking" and also some challenges in getting to the put-in at Boiling Creek.  Over 30 people chose to paddle 4 miles on Coldwater Creek from Spring Hill Bridge to Adventures Unlimited on a Moon Light Paddle in some fairly nippy temperatures.  While it was a full moon, often the trees and high creek banks limited the amount of light that shone on the creek.  There were five paddlers who took an unexpected swim. Fortunately everyone made it safely back to Adventures Unlimited.

The Florida Paddlers' Rendezvous is held annually, and plans are being made for this event in 2008.  The Tampa Bay Sea Kayakers will sponsor it.  Keep an eye on the Green Wave Forum calendar for an announcement of the exact location and date of this event next fall.
