Katie's Landing is closed until March for "improvements"  This was brought to by attention by a fellow contributor to the Forum, chiefg.  He emailed me this link

Katie's Landing

That explained the barriers I saw on July 19, 2008.

Wekiva River

Monday, July 28, I asked a ranger at Wekiwa Springs State Park what the situation was at Katie's Landing.  "Oh, we just got a memo"  Which was tacked to the wall, inside the entrance station.  She read it to me. Bottom line, it is closed until March.    I will try to follow up on this, find out what the improvements will be.  Should anyone know more, let you fellow paddlers know.

There is an alternate launch site. Wekiva Haven, about a mile up the road from Katies.  In 2005, it cost a buck to put in there.   I'll be using it while Katie's is closed, I'll let you know if the price has gone up.

I got a quick response to my email re: restrooms
We have the restroom closed at this time due to the pipes freezing and breaking at the well. The damage was extensive and parts have been ordered for us to be able to perform the necessary repairs.

Plumbing still not hooked up, January 31, 2010. I expressed my concern to the State:
Katies Landing.
Was better before the "improvements" closed it for over a year. At least there was a port-o-let. Now, a locked restroom. To bad I have to pee on the ground. What a waste of my tax and fee dollars.
Put the port-o-let back, please.

It should be interesting to find out what really happened. I can't imagine 15 months to built a non-working restroom.

Katie's has reopened. It took 15 months to build a restroom. Which does not have the plumbing connected. The idiots who threw away our money away on these "improvements" removed the perfectly serviceable port-o-let. For more, and photos, see Katie's Landing I'm glad its open, angry it has been closed for no good reason.

Today, 1-25-09, I learned Wekiva Haven is also closed. No idea why, looks permanent. Construction continues at Katie's. I found a place to launch. Wilson's Landing Park. Last left turn west bound off SR 46. There is a sign on 46. Seminole County Park. I put in there today for the first time.

Update from the Florida State Park's website.
Katie’s Landing, part of Lower Wekiva, is under construction. We hope to have this open in March of 2009. The improvements include parking, restroom facility and picnic tables. Launching of canoes and kayaks will be available and visitors can enjoy a five-hour trip on the Wekiva River, departing Wekiwa Springs State Park and finishing at Katie’s Landing. Watch for this activity beginning in April, 2009.
