From Rogers Park to the spring and back

My Report:

I finally got to paddle up the Weeki Wachee to the spring and back. I've really been jonesing for a good paddling and I got one today. Since I already have Fridays off my boss gave me my July 4th holiday on Monday and I got up early and was at Rogers Park by about 9:30 am. I like to paddle up the Weeki Wachee, it's an excellent workout. I like to call it adventurecising.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign.... Anyone caught having fun on this river will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law ;-) There are a lot of signs telling you all the things you cannot do, but Weeki Wachee is still a pretty nice place to paddle. It seems to me the prettier the river, the stricter the rules, and in recent years I have seen these rules get posted more prominently although I haven't seen anyone enforcing them, yet.

Since it was a Monday with little motorboat traffic I did bit of snorkeling. There is no alcohol allowed on the river. I pick up trash when I'm out there. Guess what kind of cans I found? Not a single soda can. ALL beer cans. No comment. You have to try snorkeling down a spring fed river. It's like flying over the limestone, logs and sea grasses, every once in a while passing a school of mullet. Too cool!!!!

As long as I'm on a soap box, how come dogs aren't allowed on the river? I clean up after my dog, which is more than I can say for the cretin who left a diaper on the bank. That was one piece of trash that I didn't pick up.

The day was gorgeous and sunny, the water was crystal clear (and there really wasn't much trash). I was by myself and I took my sweet time stopping to talk to other paddlers, take photos and enjoy the spring water. I got back to Rogers Park by about 3:30 pm. I didn't see a drop of rain and all in all had a GREAT time. Later that evening after I was home the rain clouds let loose. Perfect timing!

Hope to see you on the water!
