Peaden Bridge to Cotton Bridge on the Blackwater River.

My Report:

This short trip has a lot of traffic. If you are taking the kids, the trip is perfect, as it has plenty of swimming holes, rope swings, easy navigation (few obstacles), and long and wide sand banks. On our trip, we were among roughly 30 others in various stages of canoeing and swimming. At one swimming hole, you can find a waterfall. At others, whole groups were lined up to try out rope swings.

Fortunately, we also found plenty of stretches that were quiet. Paddling was easy. In fact, during very long stretches, all that was needed was an occasional touch to the water to avoid banks and simple floating. We met one family who were "treasure hunting," i.e., their child searched the water for discarded cans. Whether this family was a part of the canoe rental companies or not wasn't clear to us, but it seemed to the companies' advantage to keep the river clean, so we appreciated the effort.

We spotted one turtle, a (we think) broken snake egg, and a water moccasin, who was eager to hide beneath roots--and that's just where we let it be. Our most interesting "wild" life spotting turned out to be the naked lady on the beach. We were drifting around one of those quiet turns, and there she was facing away from us talking to someone in the water. She held a towel over her front, and we thought she was wearing a thong. To our (and her) surprise, her bottoms were somewhere in the water. We didn't ask for an explanation, however, as she was already embarrassed enough.

At two points on the river, the remains of train trestles can be found. I suspect these are the remains of logging activities earlier in the last century.

We got out at Cotton Bridge, which is a recreation park with bathrooms, showers, picnic pavilions, and a playground.
