Update on the "improvements" to Katies Landing. Now the State says it will be open in July, 2009. Yakdave's observation indicates that is unlikley. Wilson's Landing will continue to be the place to launch on the Lower Wekiva for the foreseeab~

My Report:

I have not paddled the Lower Wekiva River from Katies Landing to the St Johns River since last July. Nor has anybody, as Katies has been closed for "improvements". Unneeded improvements,in my opinion. Furthermore, an alternate, private launch site, Wekiva Haven, upstream of Katies has closed permanently. The next option is Wilson's Landing, a Seminole County facility, downstream of State Road 46. I've put in at Wilson's three or four times since Katies closed, each time paddling upstream, than back down.

Today, I decided to go upstream to have a look at Katies from the Wekiva, then turn back. I 'm guessing that's about a mile, maybe more.

Once at Katies, I decided to keep going, all the way to Blackwater Creek. I miss this part of the Wekiva. One good thing about the closings. Very few people on the River. Three motor boats, a dozen kayakers in two groups, and I.

The photos tell the story more eloquently than I can.
