Inspired both by DarkKnights report, and photos a friend posted on another site, I decicded to paddle the Wekiva River from Katie's Landing to Blackwater Creek on Sunday, November 22, 2010.

My Report:

I had not seen any deer since November 6, and no deer photos since November 1, both on Rock Springs Run. Where I planned to go until I read DarkKnight's report Saturday night. I was tired after a long day on the Rainbow River abd the thought of the easy put in at Katie's seemed better than the long hill at Wekiwa Springs State Park. Also, I slept late, 8:00 pm. That meant I'd get to Wekiwa Springs SP after 9, when the rental concession opens. No rentals at Katie's, just the launch. One car when I arrived at 9:30.

Twenty minutes later, just entering the Lower Wekiva River State Preserve, I heard something walking in the water. Deer, I thought. Sounds big, could it be bear? Came round a bend, and I saw why the sound was louder than what I am used to for one deer. It was several deer. One by one, does and bucks. Fording the Wekiva from the east to west bank. I drifted towards them, taking photos. One doe remained on the east bank. On the west, the deer noisily crashed through through the forest. I could hear grunting, the bucks, I assume. A doe came back into the water, a buck in pursuit. They ran along the bank, then back into the woods.

Wow. I've seen a single deer crossing the narrow Rock Springs Run. Seeing a mini herd ford the wider Wekiva was a natural spectacle. I thought of a fictional character as I watched the deer's heads above the water line. Thidwick, the Big Hearted Moose.
This was a great paddle, more deer than people, three. All kayakers. Lots of alligators. Paddled to Blackwater Creek, up it for 45 minutes. Saw otters three times on the Wekiva. Multiple criiters two of the three times. To fast for my camera. Landed at 2:45. Only disappointment, the turkeys were too far in the woods for a photo this last outing before Thanksgiving.
