Paddled the Wekiva from Katie's to Blackwater Creek, 30 minutes into the creek and back to Katie's

My Report:

It was a beautiful cold day, but beautiful anyways. My wife bailed out and left me alone for this one. I was planning to go to Weekie Wachee or Three Sisters but my UW digital camera is still on the manufacturer. Did not want to be in crystal clear waters with manatees around and not being able to obtain nice underwater pics so those plans are postponed until the camera comes back. Where to go? Katie's Landings was my first thought. Close from home, easy Put In / Take Out and scenic river.

Was in the water at 8:33. As cold as you can imagine. Had to wear a sweater, long pants and socks because my toes started to get numb. That is the only complain about this trip. Had an enjoyable day. Saw otters, wading birds, song birds, and no gators. Two couples fishing in a dingy and a canoe as started my trip. After paddling by them near Wekiva Haven had the river for myself. One boat on while paddling up river and another one on my way out. Not bad.

For this paddle found a way to paddle west from the island North of Katie's. That was something I always wanted to do. Saw otters in that part of the river. Was not able to get a decent pic because they played with hide and seek with me. They won.

At Blackwater Creek turned around back to Katie's when heard gun shots in the distance. Not sure but I believe also heard dogs. Not wanting to take a chance at being shot by accident did a 180 and went back to the Wekiva River.

The Wekiva River is very clear, low and fast. Ended very tired after 7 hours in the river.

Have a post on our blog Views From Our Kayak - Lower Wekiva River Jan 14 2012.

Tried to post here a link to the Photobucket album but did not work. Will post some pics later tonight.
