My Report:

This section of the Chipola had been paddled two weeks ago during the Florida Paddler's Rendezvous. We were unable to paddle it then because we were assisting with the Apalachicola River paddles and requested that it be added to the FPCKC camp/paddle event which just concluded. Paddlesolo, the impresario of that event, generously consented to lead us and another Rendezvous volunteer.

The river is lower. Except for one large tree which extends across the route in Ward Lake, it is easily navigable. Where the Rendezvous paddlers two weeks ago were able to paddle over it, it now requires a running start which smaller kayaks and stronger paddlers might be able to do. Longer kayaks may require a bit of scooting half way over. Canoes might have problems. The mud there is calf deep, the water is more than waist high and the water runs fast -- a caution for those who must pull their craft over the log.

The cypress trees, many topped, but still sending out new lower branches, are impressive; their leaves are turning rust brown. The Florida maples and other deciduous trees are also beginning to turn color. It is a beautiful 14 mile paddle which goes through different types of North Florida river terrain. Jehue Landing, halfway in the paddle, on river left is a good lunch spot.
