The Chipola River Sink Boat Ramp, parking area and launch is in the Florida Caverns State Park canoe rental area. This was a round trip to the springs, about 1 mile upstream from the boat launch.

My Report:

During the FPCKC camp/paddle we had an hour and a half after paddling Ocheesee Pond which gave us enough time to try an upstream and back trip toBaltzell (pronounced Bazzell or Bozzel) Springs about a mile from the Chipola River Sink Boat Ramp and canoe Launch at Florida Caverns State Park.

Another group paddling downriver from CR 162 to the River Sink landing on Friday had encountered a huge tree around which they had to portage, a mile from take-out. We set that falling tree as our turn-around point. (They had two other pullovers.)

It is a lovely little paddle and with several springs near that one mile mark. It demands more respect. (One of the springs' is blocked by a log over the creek, but the short walk around the log is well worth the effort we were told.) We saw 3 deer and three ibis with the immature brown coloration. Based on the plants growing along that stretch of the river, spring should be a particularly attractive time, if there is sufficient light filtering through the woodland floor.

The water was clear enough so one could actually see at the launch where the river goes underground. This area is the historical natural bridge that Andrew Jackson crossed, although at the present time some of the water continues under the bridge and down a log flume run.

One of the paddlers at the FPCKC event took time on Sunday to create an opening through the log jam by the springs, so one can paddle further upstream (and back). He also cleared a path in Lower Dry Creek to the Chipola River on another day of the event. One paddler arrived one day earlier to clear Holmes Creek so the Thursday paddlers had a clearer paddle. The unseen and unsung river keepers, we're thankful for their work.
