This section usually has downfalls and turns and limbos and provides good opportunities to practice one's turning technique.

My Report:

This is an update on the river conditions on this section of Econfina Creek. This was one of the choices of the final day of the FPCKC fall camp/paddle held the first weekend of November. Next year's event will be held on November 1-3 at the same location, Florida State Caverns Park in Marianna. Even though the Florida Paddler's Rendezvous had been held in Marianna at Arrowhead Park just two weeks earlier, there were 50 paddlers at this event, many from Alabama and a small group from Mississippi, topping previous attendance.

There are considerably more downed trees which required at least one pull over and several scoot overs (depending on craft) and more limbo situations than we have experienced in two previous paddles on this section. The lower water levels may have been a blessing, if one prefers limbos to pull overs. The water runs relatively swiftly so longer craft may find that the trip will take longer to maneuver, around masses of branches and dead fall. It is what one should expect of this stretch of the Econfina; a nice beginning technical creek, good to help hone your turning skills. The current state of tree fall makes this a great classroom. For beginning paddlers consider this as such, give yourself time, and you also have the beauty of the venue as a bonus.

Our group had to contend with a 20 minute thunder-lightening and deluge of rain which raised the question of how best to deal with this kind of situation. Fortunately there were no wide, exposed areas of the river when this happened about 1 1/2 miles to take-out. We all kept paddling.

Some of us had carbon paddles, which are supposed to be good electrical conductors. We read a book of one cross-Canada paddler who, in this situation, turned to his spare plastic paddle. Some without sponges or bilge pumps found enough water in their boats for the borrowed bilge pumps to be used effectively, proof that there was that much raining falling on us. Many did not have an extra change of clothes in their boats. Fortunately, it was a thunderstorm and not a cold front rain which is followed by dropping temperatures. The rain was relatively warm and the air was warm enough, although one paddler said that if the rain persisted he might have started to tremble (a symptom of hypothermia). The upside, if there was one, was that there was a capsize during the rain and everyone was already wet, so helping the capsized paddler was a non-event.

When we returned back to camp, one persons said that when he paddles under these circumstances he recommends that paddlers spread out so if one person gets hit, the others further away can render assistance (CPR?).

What is the best advice on this situation?

The paddle was 7.9 mile and took 3 hours of paddling time. Before the rain, we stopped to have lunch under a beautiful sunny sky at the old Boy Scout camp, now under Northwest Water Management District jurisdiction and called Blue Spring Camp.
