Cayo Costa is a Florida State Park located at the north end of Lacosta Island. This island, along with its better-known cousins, Sanibel and Captiva, form a barrier island chain that protects Charlotte Harbor from storms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Cayo Costa State Park: Miles of unspoiled shell and white sand beaches, sparkling blue water, mangrove islands, cabins and cheeseburgers in paradise. What more could a sea kayaker ask? Mmmm... how about good health and clear skies on this trip? Yes!

How do I get info on taking a rental truck on the barge or ferry to Cayo Costa. I am moving to the island in June and cant find any info on where to get the ferry or barge. I have tried leaving out of Bokeelia and Pine Island. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance , Alex

When not kayaking, I handle damage claims for rental car companies. I think the Budget renter may be in violation of the rental agreement-use on paved roads only. Wink

Well, I wish I knew the scoop on the rental truck. Just so happens it was spotted going through the channel near Useppa. There are many upscale homes on the island and taking a guess maybe this is the best way to move-in (or out) if you have a place on the island. My second guess is this was the US Government launching "Bay of Pigs II" from Useppa, but after Iraq they ran out of money for proper equipment. Grin

Loved the picture of the rental truck on a barge. Inquiring minds want to know where, what, why, when, and how. I have had a lot of fun making up plausible stories about the truck on the barge. Paddlesolo

Since my first visit in 2000 I've made an effort to get a cabin on Cayo Costa for a few days during the holiday season. Well, at least every other year. The 2004/2005 hurricane season discouraged me from attending as cabins and other facilities were damaged after Hurricane Charley pancaked the island in August 2004.

The park service did a great job repairing all facilities, however mother nature is a bit slower. The excellent mangrove tunnel at Part Island is gone, gone gone. As is many mangroves and other vegetation on Part and small islands near Cayo Costa.

Australian Pines on Cayo Costa that survived the hurricane have mostly been removed by the park service as part of the non-native species removal program.

The beautiful homes on Useppa are looking as nice as ever and you'll get chased out of the marina if you try to land there.
