Bayport marks the end of the line for those paddling the Weeki Wachee River. It's also a good starting point for exploring coastal Hernando County. Here the shallow marsh lined waterways and tiny mangrove islands teem with Redfish, trout and snook.

(Bayport to Pine Island) Hank (tonto), Jerry (jandbrare) and I (admin) took a saltwater kayak trip from Bayport to Pine Island this morning. We discovered clean well kept parks, BayPort and Alfred Mckethan, along with a host of saltmarsh waterways just perfect for exploring.

While sitting on the beach at Pine I. Park, a young man left his place near us and walked into the water. I watched him with binoculars and he walked all the way to Rock Island and onto the island. Later I spotted him walking back. The round trip is just over a mile. He was never more than thigh deep. When he returned, I asked him if he did that often. He replied, "Yes." I also saw families playing in the water 300 yards off shore. These waters truly deserve to be called the "flats."
