In Seminole State Forest, beautiful paddle, permit required from forest service. From S.R. 46 entrance, go few miles on Sand Road into forest and put in creek just past concrete bridge. Downed trees block the way to Wekiva downstream. Check water levels.

(Seminole State Forest) Three visists in five days to the Seminole State Forest. I saw as many bears in the Forest and adjacent Lower Wekiva State Preserve as boats on Blackwater Creek, four.

(Seminole State Forest) Two weeks ago I kayaked in Wisconsin, last week, Sanibel, next week, the Keys. Where to go this weekend? I decided to get a State Forest Permit and kayak Blackwater Creek and the Wekiva River. Nothing like locking a gate behind you to launch the kayak.

(Seminole State Forest) Paddling Blackwater Creek makes me feel like a rich guy in a private nature preserve. A permit is required to access Forest roads to reach the launch site. My permit was good for 2 weeks. 4 days on the water, 1 other boat. And that was after I landed.

(Moccasin Springs) Finally cool enough to camp, so I contacted the Seminole State Forest and was informed the Moccasin Springs site was available. Also dry enough. I had a reservation in April, but the site was flooded. Expected at a site between a Spring and a Creek.

Nice to see a Blackwater Creek report by someone other than me. With another Dave. I like that.

The bear was gone on Sunday. I think the guys I saw fishing took it. Nobody else was on the Creek.

Sorry to see the pics of the dead bear. Hopefully FWC/Forest Service can recover the carcass and determine cause of death.

A litany for Yakdave:

From having to view pictures of dead bear carcasses,
Good Lord, deliver us!

You can put in at Katie's Landing and paddle down the Wekiva to the confluence, than paddle up Blackwater. Or contact the Divison of Forestry for a permit and gate combination. Or launch at the Lake Norris Conservation Area and bring a chain saw if you are going down Creek. The short paddle to Lake Norris is kept clear

Last time I mountain biked the park - the dirt road had a locked gate across it - easy to go around on bike but less so in car with kayak atop. Is there another put-in?

Seeing bears is easy. Just go where they are fifty or so times a year. If you are lucky, you may see one or two a year.

YakDave - I am soooo envious of you and your bear photos. I don't know how you do it. Wear bear bait or tie pork chops to your bike/kayak?

Gotta love the reflections in blackwater streams. The one of the alligator with the actual tail touching the reflected tail is awesome!
