Shoal River

Part of Florida's Greenways and Trails system, the Shoal River is a twisty, shallow and usually narrow sand-bottom river near Crestview FL. Trail starts at SR 285, ends SR 85. Permits are required if you paddle within Eglin AFB boundaries.

(Hwy 285 Bridge) We started this trip with the intention of verifying the put in/take out and condition of this upper most section of the Shoal but we got a whole lot more. Have to admit this would not be for everyone-river was very low-took skill to manuver.

(Laird Road to Hwy 90) Nice shallow waterway with a sandy bottom and lots of side channels. There are even a few small springs off the river some.

(Shoal River-Laird - US 90) The section of the Shoal River beginning at Laird Road is through natural surroundings with some downfall during the first 4 miles. It has a sandy bottom, some sandbars at low water levels, and many springs and streams entering along the way.

Over the weekend I spent a few hours scouting the Shoal River. Hwy 90 bridge (4 miles east of Crestview) and Hwy 85 bridge (south of I-10/Crestview) are easily accessable. Water level good, tea colored. Will try to paddle the 10 miles between.
