My Report:

May 9, 2008

The Molasses Keys are made up of 2 islands and 2 rocky outcroppings. The smaller of the 2 keys is a great paddling destination that has it all: a nice swimming hole, interesting tide-pools, a large enough area to camp and a nice view of the Seven Mile Bridge (while far enough away so you don't hear the traffic).

I have been here several times but on this trip I was joined by club members Ken & Joann Robinson, my cousin Mixi from Germany and her friend (also from Germany but visiting from her nanny job in Michigan). We left Veteran's Beach and enjoyed a calm paddle past Money Key where we saw lots of stingrays and eagle rays. They were swimming and jumping all around us and we had fun chasing after some.

Unfortunately, this island is a popular boater destination that gets trashed regularly. When we got to the island, the evidence of a few parties and picnics was hard to ignore. We picked up as much as we could carry and planned to come back with a boat to get the large items. Why anyone would want to trash this pretty place is beyond me. As you can see by one of the photos, it is not always locals. Past visitors also feel the need to deface one of the few trees out there. Sad.

Anyway, after our lunch we enjoyed the swimming hole off the sandy beach facing the larger island. The water is a bit deeper and the tide rushing by keeps it nice and clear. Then we checked out the tide pools on the rocky shoreline on the southside. The girls could have stayed all day to sunbathe but we decided to head back since we had to make it to Key West for the sunset celebration. On the way back Ken showed us some of his kayak rolls.

This is a great trip - one of the best in the Keys!

Special Interests and Comments:

Special InterestsThe old Flagler railroad bridge from Knight's Key to Little Duck took 4 years to build and was actually considered 4 different bridges. It wasn't referred to as the 7 Mile Bridge until the 1930's.
