My Report:

Geiger Creek
March 22, 2008

Bob Zani (from Massachusetts) was the only club member that showed up to paddle this loop with me. The first time I did it was with club member Donna Doud. It was her "backyard" after moving to Geiger Key from Islamorada but it had been a few years so I was hoping not to get lost on the backside of the island. Not that you could really get lost - we were not in the wilderness by any means. Geiger Key Marina was just a stone's throw from the put in and we would be paddling past the Naval Air Station and we could just wave down a fighter jet!

When we left the put-in we decided to paddle north toward US 1 and locate the short nameless creek that goes under Boca Chica Road and behind Geiger Key. There is a very shallow lake back there with several small islands, a couple of which have sandy shorelines to take a break at. The entrance to Geiger Creek is at the north end of this lake. Part of the lake was impounded so the creek actually begins as a canal. You will know when you have reached the creek when it takes a sharp turn left and starts to meander. There are a couple nice spots for a swim or snorkel - maybe next trip, it was still cool yet.

Exiting the creek we experienced very shallow water as the tide was falling. It was doable but parts of it might not be at extreme low. A good ending to this trip would be a stop at the restaurant at Geiger Key Marina, the "backside of paradise" as they say! The beer is cold and the barbeque is tasty. Sometimes there's even live music.
