Thursday Trips - October 30th

Hillsborough River State Park to Dead River Park

This paddle begins at our campground canoe launch ramp and proceeds down stream about 3 miles to the Dead River Park. The Hillsborough River in this section is very slow moving hence its name Dead River. It flows through thick forest of oak, cypress, pine and cedar. Paddlers will notice that much of the trees lining the riverbank are covered with moss. Tannin seepage from the surrounding land darkly stains the water obscuring the occasional limestone rock and the sandy bottom. Turtles and bird life can be seen on most trips.

Rainbow River

It takes a bit of driving to arrive at the launch point for this spring fed river, but it’s worth it. We launch from a city park at Dunnellon to paddle up river to the Rainbow River’s source. The trip up is a bit strenuous since it is 7 miles upriver against a 2 mph current (total trip of 14 miles) so must be in good paddling shape to make this trip. The water is crystal clear and the river is beautiful. There are some houses along the river, so it is not totally wild. The downstream leg is easy and quick.

Ozello/ St Martins River - coral beds

This trip launches from the Hernando County area along the coast. You will paddle down St. Martins River for about 7 miles (total trip of 14 miles) thru tidal marshes which typify this coastal area. You then come to a shallow delta region where the river flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The water is usually crystal clear and very shallow so that you can see small pieces of coral that look like orange golf balls. There are some keys close by (sorry no white sand) where you can take a break and have lunch).
