Small stream with a little current. It is faster if the water is higher.

My Report:

STYX RIVER

Reminder to Myself: Self, do not do the whole trip again unless you do a reverse shuttle. We should have dropped a

couple of vehicles at the Hwy. 87 take out while we were waiting for everyone else to arrive. Although it was only 16.7 miles each way, it took 30 minutes each way to run it. That means 30 X 4 = TWO HOURS of shuttle time.

A BIG THANK YOU to Jan Heart and Delbert Jackson for helping me with the shuttle. Thanks, also, to Austen, Dave, Carol, Judy M, Diane, & Buddy for waiting with Jan & my canoes while Delbert ran us back to the put in to get our vehicles.

We met at the Oasis and left there at 9:32 to go to the put in. It was around 11:15 when we got on the water. We put
on at The Buzzard's Roost, an old beer joint from days past, on Dale Wilson's property. The water level was 2.30 with a flow of 207, which is low, especially to run the rapid. It would have been great to have at least six more inches of water.
That didn't stop most of the 17 paddlers from running it. Austen just couldn't get enough. He ran it four times trying to see which way was best, as in front first, sideways, or rear first. He didn't swim any way he went. Buddy was right in
there with him. He even went up the rapid and came back down. We decided to eat lunch while we were at the rapid. There were a group of three canoes and a kayak that were camping overnight that was interesting to watch line their loaded canoes.

Alan and Norma Low left there vehicle at Hwy 64 and were very glad. We had stopped at Persimmon Branch, picking up tiles from the old church the 1906 Hurricane destroyed when it started to lightening and rain a little. It was only about 10 minutes to their take out from there. The rest of us headed on down for the last five miles to our take out. It was not long before the wind picked up, along with serious rain, and hail. We stopped at the campground below Styx River Resort to wait it out. I didn't feel too good about standing under the trees on the bank. Part of the group went to the first camper near by with an awning. The guy handed out towels to them to dry off. Some of us ended up under a deck near the water that had a few sand chairs. We watched as umbrellas and tubes blew off the sand bar and down the creek. We had a new stream coming down the ramp from all the rain that was falling. After 20 minutes or so, we decided it was safe to head on down the creek. The sun even peeked out for a little while. As we neared the end, we could hear more thunder.

After running the shuttle, eight of us went back to the Oasis to eat. It now has a section that looks like a railroad car decorated with old train memorability. The food and fellowship was great. We left there around 7:00 and I drove in heavy rain most of the way back to Bay Minette. It was a great day with great friends. We were blessed to have had a safe day.
